On Monday June 17, 2002, after the VES Festival ended, I had the honor and pleasure of going to ILM on a tour of the facilities. While much has been said and written about ILM, it still remains a place of wonder and mystery. I had previously been at ILM on unrelated business but this is the first time that I was able to see many of the their most guarded secrets. Hopefully this article will dispel some of the myths and show a bit of the place which started a rebirth of the VFX industry and where true movie magic is done.
In particular I would like to thank Suzy Starke, Rachel Goodwin, Ellen Pasternak and Nagisa Yamamoto of the PR department for all their help. In particular I have to give special thanks to the great and never praised enough Rob Coleman for his time and warm reception at ILM. Many thanks to all the ILM employees for the their time and friendly welcome and for the continued work that inspires all of us.
